Tisza River On the 30th January 2000 at 10 p.m a deadly cocktail of cyanide and heavy metals, leaked in from the Sasar waste pond near Baia Mare into a nearby creek. The poisonous liquid then ran into the Tisza River on the 4th of February. A waterborne cloud of cyanide, which has been travelling downstream through Hungary, was expected to reach the Danube Eastern Europe’s main waterway, in northern Serbia. The cyanide has wiped out many plants and animals life as it travelled down the Tisza River. Tons of fishes have been killed and drinking water supplies that has been contaminated in the Tisza River.
